There are 17 Pokemon types in total (Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, and Steel). Every Pokemon belongs to one or two types, and attacking moves belong to one type each. For a "critical hit", the damage is double what it would be otherwise, and there is a x1.5 bonus if the Pokemon's type matches the type of the move.
The following is what I found on the Pokemon Combat chart in my Player's Guides for my Pokemon games.
Each section begins with the type of the attacking move, followed by which types of defending Pokemon that results in x2 damage, which types of Pokemon result in x0.5 damage, and which are simply unaffected by that type of move.
Normal-type moves:

Fire, Water, Grass and Rock are basic elemental types.
A mixture of water and rock turns into steel,
A mixture of grass and rock turns into wind,
A mixture of water and grass turns into psychic,
