You might just need to change the MTU value in your router settings.
It is probably set to Auto at the moment and although i have no idea what causes it but it can make pages not load abd others to take forever. Set the MTU value to the highest number possible and if it is already there set it one or two lower.

Any time you put an additional device between point A and point B, you get a performance hit. However, if you're talking about one router attached to one (or even a few) computer(s), the performance hit should be measured in milliseconds... so little a human wouldn't notice the difference.
Either you've got a bad router (just because the lights are on doesn't mean it is functioning correctly) or it's not configured correctly. If you're in a home networking environment (a few computers, one router, etc.) and haven't done much configuring on the router, I suspect it's faulty. Replace the router with a good one. I suspect your issue will disappear.

Just to expand on JordanZ's answer the optimal MTU packet size is 1492... The default is 1500
