It depends, really. Someone above me said that metropolitans are better for gays, and that's true. Cities that have gay "districts" are far better than those that don't. So, cities like San Francisco are just on par with cities like Paris. The countries don't matter, it's the cities.
I've seen many LGBT films from Europe and they are all like ours in the U.S., which is good, in a way, because it highlights that our condition is the same everywhere, proving, in part, that it is a natural occurrence.
I spent 6 months in Paris and went to their Gay Pride. It was great. I never had any problems. Now, in Michigan, to contrast, I was bashed in H.S., my best friend and his boyfriend were bashed two weeks ago in the State capitol, and my friends are always been called "fag" at the mall and movies, it's rare to get good service at restaurants if they know your with all your gay friends or are on a gay date.

In each it would depend on your specific location. Amsterdam is a wonderful city, very accepting, but in much of Eastern Europe it would be very dangerous. In the US, major metropolitan areas are generally accepting (some more than others) but rural and suburban communities tend to be more conservative. I was born and lived in Ireland for 12 years, and I can't see it being at all easy in that country. I think a good rule of thumb is the larger the city, the easier it will be.

Never been to Europe, but from what I understand it would depend on where in Europe you were. Although where in America makes a difference too...

well, in big cities in both countries i think they are just about equally accepting. in small cities, maybe europe is more accepting, but not much more. as for a government on a whole view - europe by far. you can be openly gay in most european militaries and they were leaps and bounds ahead of us on benefits to life partners. i'm sure they'll all have marriage before the states does. i was quite shocked when it came up on the cali ballot and didn't pass! and i thought cali was progressive enough to pass it...

Europe. They're a much more open society in terms of sexual matters than the US. This is a country full of sanctimonious prudes who know full well who they are. Perhaps things will change when the Bush administration takes over Iraq and the fundies and red staters relocate there. Well, a girl can dream.

Europe seems to have a much more open sense of accepting sexuality, although I am sure there are very Conservative areas there as well, I just haven't been to any of them.....lol
