I recently pushed a new laptop. Last night I went to turn it on, and when I press the "on" button, nothing happens, I left it to charge up for about an hour, and tried again, but still, there is no response when I press the on button. It was working fine on tuesday, and I turned it off normally, but now it is unresponsive. Is there anything I can do other than bringing it in to be checked by Circit City or HP ?

Yes, I left it plugged in while I tried turning it on a 2nd and 3rd time. When its plugged in, the blue area around the AC outlet lights up, but when I push the on button, I get no response

Reseed the battery. Take the battery out of the laptop - and then put it back in. Have you tried turning it on with it plugged in? If so, and you still get nothing, schedule a trip back to Circuit City. You can try HP tech support but if the system won't turn on what are they going to do?

Try taking out the memory and reseating it. In most laptops, the memory is behind a door on the bottom of the machine, held closed with one or two screws. make sure your laptop is not plugged in and the battery is out when you do this. Take out the memory, plug in the power supply and see if the laptop goes on. If it does, unplug it, put the memory back in and try again. If it does not start, than the memory is bad. If it does start, it was just loose.
Also make sure the hard drive is all the way in. In most laptop, they slide into a slot and are held in with just a screw. You should really check the Laptops specs from the manufacturer to see where the parts are inside it. If the harddrive is easily accessable, pull it out and try turning on the laptop. If the laptop goes on, put the drive back in and try again. If the laptop does not go on, it's a bad harddrive. That should be the problem, usually a bad harddrive will not keep a laptop from booting, but it doesn't hurt to check.
To test the power supply and battery; first, take out the battery and try turning on with just the power cord. If it goes on, than it's a bad battery. If not, and if you know someone with the same model of laptop, borrow their power supply, take out your battery and then try turning it on. If it goes on, than you need a new power supply. Then try it with the battery in it. If it stops working, than you need both a battery and a power supply.

Circuit City Policy - less than 14 days
you return to Circuit City and they should fix/repair or replace
Circuit City will probably only do basic things OS install
replace battery, power cord if they even stock it
But if Motherboard or Video board or power supply then they will send to HP
More than 14 days but less than 1 year
HP - you deal with them on the phone support and they will probably talk you through the solution or send you a box to return it to their Service center, less than one year should be free of charge with warranty unless you got the extended warranty with Circuit City
Possible issues:
1. Battery is defective
2. Power charger defective or shorted out
3. Power supply defective/shorted on laptops this is more serious because this means you usually need to replace the mother board on HP/compaq
4. Video board is bad
5. OS installation is corrupted
on XP Windows is stored on a restore partition and HP can talk you through the install

Two questions: Did you remove the battery and put it back in? Did you leave it plugged in when you tried to turn it on so it is drawing ac power?

Unplug your computer. Remove the battery. Reinstall and plug back in. Try booting as normal.

sounds like you're using the battery only (which may be dead already)...did you try turning it on with AC power? (plugged in to the wall)...if if doesn't turn on, then yes, have it checked.
if it's still under warranty, call the manufacturer (hp?)...
