They are disease ridden little rodents. Some in CO have been found to carry strains of the bubonic plague

I normally wouldn't get into the middle of issue's like this but you said DEBATE,so I would like to help with my opinion and knowledge of the problems with Prairie Dogs in general. The problem in Lubbock, TX is the same problem every where. Disease and over population which does at lease two things 1) the dogs eat up the grazing lands and 2) they make they're communities in grazing lands which leaves big holes in the area and livestock and horses break their legs. this can and does get very costly for the rancher. Here's how I came up with opinion, I come from ranching background, done my share of cowboying, and have had to shoot my share of cattle or horses due to broken legs from prairie dog holes. More so, Prairie Dogs carry all kind of parasites, ticks and fleas. they can also carry disease's that can spread to life stock and wild animals. Here is a good example...People were dropping off like flies and no one knew why for a long time and there is was...."the four corners flu" this virus came from the droppings of rodents. who would'a guessed? My ex's grandmother died from this flu so I know just how real this was.Prairie dogs are such a huge problem in the Dakota's that they invite varmit hunters to come in and taime down the dog population. Being a member of the Varmit Hunters Assoceation, My brother and I have gone to south Dakota for a 5 day weekend's and with special varmit rifles and ammnution, take out many hundreds of dogs in that weekend and it doesn't make a dent in the population dogs. Two more things...As a hunter, there's nothing better than making 300 to 1000 yard shots consistintly with a .55 grain fragmenting hollow point called an TNT round, comming out of .243 reminton or, since I reload, I also shoot a 300 magnum pushing a .60 grain TNT moving over 2800 fps. with percise, accurately placed, shots. As a animal lover, prairie dogs are very cute, there's not much difference than a rodent type pet (which I had or have including ferrets) and it's very sad that these cute and fun to watch, playfull animals fill up the cons side of the pro's and con's list. Just like anything else, if there's no population control, any type of an animal domain will eat themselfs to starvation or effect other animals from broken legs to starvation not to mention damaging costs to the rancher trying to put a rib eye steak on your dinner table.
