Dave Barry is a popular humorist for the Miami Herald. He's about as inoffensive as they come. Here is the quote:

"As Americans, we must always remember that we all have a common enemy, an enemy that is dangerous, powerful and relentless. I refer, of course, to the federal government."

The quote was on an office door and was taken down b/c someone found it "patently offensive"

The article goes on to say that the hallway was not a "free speech zone" Is anyone else disturbed by that phrase? Is that what it's come to?

I think the disturbing phrase is "Free Speech Zone". I was under the impression that in America, everywhere is a free speech zone. That is, unless George W. Bush has anything to say about it. Now that he can throw any of us citizens in jail without habeus corpus or Geneva Convention rights, etc, "free speech zones" may be the next order of business. Heck, the US Gov't has been using double-speak for 6 years now, so we're half way to 1984 already. Damn mutterhals, why'd you have to get me started on our criminal gov't??? Crap! Time for a drink I guess. How about a toast to stopping the worlds #1 terrorist: G.W. Bush....yep, I'll drink to that!

If by that phrase, you mean "I refer, of course, to the federal government", then no. But its a personal view that should be expressed outside of the office. Just a question of good judgment.
