I have a domain name and pay for hosting service. I thought of a better domain name and it is available. My current domain is up for renewal in 2007, but I don't think I'll renew it. After I purchase my new domain, what are the steps for pointing my current host provider to the new domain, so that the transaction will go smoothly?

Buy the new domain name and let your hosting provider that you bought the new domain. If you have access to the DNS records you might want to point out your DNS to their servers or they are able to do it for you then you can let them do it.

After that happens you must make a copy of all your files from your current domain to your new domain.

Now, you dont have to wait until it expires for you to buy the new domain and make all the steps listed above, you can do it right now and when the time comes things should be ready to go.

It's just a matter of the DNS root servers pointing your new domain name to a particular public IP address. I would register the new domain name and have your current host be the host for that as well. Have their DNS servers point both domain names to the same IP address. Anyone who types in the old, or the new, domain name will be routed to the same site. When the old domain goes dormant, the new domain will already be up and running on the same IP address. Seamless.

it shouldn't be much of a problem, provided your web host is not a pain in the neck when it comes to that topic...just change the domain in your web host's settings...
