what he means by ABCD is 1000A + 100B + 10C + D
and DCBA is 1000D + 100C + 10B + A

If A, B, C and D represent number symbols, as someone suggested, then I suggest trial and error ;)

If they are numbers, than one of them must be 0.

(1000a+100b+10c+d)*4=1000d+100c+10b+a
3999a+390b-60c-996d=0

you know that a, b, c & d are integers. From here all I could do is trial & error.
