It depends on what ipod you have. if you have the newest ipod nanos, it is said that if you only listen to music, you can go up to 24 hours. But if you have the Video Ipod and you watch videos on it, it really drains the battery. I would watch one music video and the next thing i know, the battery would be one fourth gone. But i go to listen to music after that and it would come back a little bit. So its never stable.

as for the way to stop the music, i don't think there is. I just turn mine's off or pause it and leave it on.

1. There is no clear stop button on the i-pod as it is deisgned in a way that you can start where you left . You should ideally be using the pause button and use the hold "slide button" so that no more changes happen to the selected playlist or song being played.
To save battery while you do this, you would need to swtich it off before you use the hold. If you happen to forget and only use the hold, this would certainly drain your battery.
The new generation i-pod's are desgined to have a longer battery life. Eg an ipod nano would get upto 20 hrs once fully charged, whille an ipod video would get upto 5 hrs. The difference in them is the power consumption by the hard disk and flask disk. The old i-pods have a hard disk similar to that of your PCs.
