The Malleus Maleficarum was not sanctioned by but written by monks, in Latin (the official languauge of the Roman Catholic church), and means 'hammer of the bad-doers'. The word witch is an English invention. The church's official stance today is that this book never existed, and it tried to get all copies burnt, because it was simply a load of old rubbish, used to spread fear and superstition among the illiterate masses.
