It can mean either that you have found part of the
shed skin of a spider that recently molted or a
broken off leg of a spider that perhaps got caught
in some way and pulled loose from its leg to
escape. If the spider is still growing and can shed
again it can regenerate the lost leg. However the
new leg will be smaller than the others and won't
catch up to them in size until after a few more
sheds. Except for tarantulas and their relatives
spiders that are sexually mature do not shed any
more, so they can't regenerate the leg. I have seen a living spider still managing to creep around
with only three legs left.

It could mean, somewhere, you have a spider with a serious limp.

In California, this means you have to build an access ramp in your home to all those places a spider may way to get to. The California Spiders with Disability Act (SDA) requires that all household spiders with less than 8 appendages, minus the manibles, be given the same rights as all the other spiders.

Now, if you live anywhere else...you can just stomp him and you're fine.

If the spider leg you found is bigger than your own leg it means it's time to move out of the house.

Spiders have external skeletons and routinely shed their outer skeletons in order to grow. What you found was probably the skeleton of the spider’s leg that it shed. You probably have a bigger spider lurking about somewhere… lol
