If you are a union member then check with your representative as some unions give their members the opportunity to have free wills drawn up with a union solicitor. I know the GMB Union do this. If you are not, despite the fact you will have to pay more to have it done I would urge you to seek out a solicitor as this document is a very important one as you know and any mistakes on it cannot be rectified when the will is read for obvious reasons. IE: You will be dead, so think about it before you do it.

It really depends on your situation. For one, since you refer to a "solicitor" I can assume that you are outside of, or from outside of, the US. The laws may be different where you are located/from.

If you are going to simply leave everything outright to one or a few persons, and there are no estate tax implications, then doing it yourself or online may be the cheapest route.

However, if you are married, have an abundance of wealth (which would require an estate tax - in the US, probably around $2+ million currently - changes pending), have young children, etc. then your situation becomes more complicated and there are more factors to consider - in which case, an attorney / solicitor would better be able to accomplish "the intent of the testator."

Hope that helps!

You don't have to use a solicitor but it's advisable and all Wills must be signed in the presence of witnesses who are not beneficiaries.
