I heard that in WW2 the American fighter planes carried 27 feet (9 yards) of machine gun ammo. So if you gave the enemy the 'whole 9 yards' then you had fired all your ammo at him.

It may have come from an expression used by World war 2 fighter pilots, typically they held bullets for their machine guns in belts in the wings. these belts were about 9 yards long, so when they said they used all their ammo, they said they used the whole nine yards.
