I heard that there population is around 1million rats for 1 person in the city. You know how many rats that could end up being if they keep populating/Having sex?

In addition to the disease problems mentioned earlier, there are far more rats in New York City than could actually be used by all the researchers in North America.
Even so, the number of rats in most urban centres has been grossly exaggerated. Pest management specialists have estimated that the true number of rats is only about 1 rat for every 40 people, certainly not the 10 rats per person statistic that is often iterated. That still comes out to about 250,000 rats though.

Research rats are bred in captivity and are free from diseases. Rounding up the rats in New York for research would be a waste of time, those things are so filthy and full of disease that their research value would be nil.

The rats used in laboratories are bred for genetic purity and free of disease etc. That is why they don't use the ones captured from the streets.

Lab rats are usually genetically altered and grown in a sterile environment. That is so they can be tested without any enviromental factors clouding the results of the tests

I think test rats are scientificly bred to have certain traits. I don't think mutated gened rats would be as effective. Good try though!

Bad idea. Rats from NY would spit on lab floors, whistle at any women in the lab, and use all the drugs for "recreational" purposes.

we can not use them for research due to size and appetite
