YES. It's called lucid dreaming, and you can teach yourself to do this over a relatively short period of time.
I can give you one example of how I came to learn to this. Pick something that you usually have with you at all times...personally, I chose my watch. Make a habit of looking at it many, many, many times throughout the day...like on the half hour, every half hour, something like that. Really look at it - notice all of it's details and everything. Pretty soon, it'll become such a habit that you'll remember to do that while you're dreaming too. However, usually, in your dreams something will be different about it, it won't look exactly the same way it should. Then, when you see this, you'll realize you're dreaming and can then do whatever suits your fancy. It's great fun once you learn to control yourself.

Yes, if I'm having a bad dream, I'll make myself stop dreaming about it and move on to another dream. Or I'll be having a crazy dream and I'll tell myself this isn't possible and I'll move on to another one. And sometimes I'll keep repeating the dream until I make the ending that I want. I also day dream a lot, so maybe I just have an active mind.

I don't know that you can control the actual dream but I do know you can get yourself to dream about a certain situation, person or whatever. If you feel like you are controlling your dreams, you might be right at that spot where you are about to wake up. At this point it might be that fantasy has taken over.

Its called lucid dreaming and we learned about this in my Motivation class.
What you do is periodically a couple times a day ask: am I dreaming? for about a week or so? Then when you dream, the question will pop up and you can take control.

I believe you can to an extent. You have to have an open consciousness when you're sleeping. I know that sounds impossible but it is a matter of how you think. I have recently been able to dream about what I want to dream about when I start to fall asleep.

sometimes, I recently realized that whenever I think about something a lot during the day and before I go to bed I have dreams about it 98% of the time, so I believe they can.
