Crucial's website has a great walkthrough on finding out if you motherboard will support more memory, and what type to buy!

You can find the information you want in the Motherboard Manual of your PC. If its not available, then you can download it from the manufacturers website. If you can let us know the Make of your PC / Model etc, somebody here can find a way for you. All we need to get is the Motherboard Information. You can find the Model/Make/Manufacturer information on the Motherboard, if you can manage to open the PC.

The best place to look is in your motherboard documentation that may have come with your pc. Second, the pc or motherboard manufacuter's website. Third a program called hwinfo that you can d/l here:
http://www.hwinfo.com/
Once installed, run it and click on the memory tab. It should tell you the maximum allowable memory amount and the speed of your memory.

Go onto the manufacturer's web site and it will tell you how much RAM your computer can hold.
