I am looking for a good laptop that plays and burns cd and dvd? Can anyone recommend a good laptop under $600? I also heard that dell is the best is that true? Also must be good for school. Thanks.

In April I got a Gateway laptop at Circuit City for $700.
It has widescreen monitor, AMD Turion 64, 80 GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, CD/DVD burner, and much more.

When I was shopping there, they had some other brands for as low as $529, but they did not have all of what i wanted/needed on them.

Two tips .... DONT buy at "Best Buy" .. it's not ... and their service sucks. And dont get an emachine. Emachine is now made by Gateway, and isn't as bad as it was, but it's still not worth taking the chance. I have heard mixed reviews on Gateways, but have had no problems with mine, and I like it very much.

I been looking myself. Under $600 is out there, but, well, just but.
Many seem to feel Dell is good and they have a Laptop at times around $600. http://www.dell.com I think is the link.
The problem with me is I want Physical Backup Software and not a Partition on the Hard Drive. So, that costs extra, not much for XP home, $10 I think. XP pro is much more. AND possible extra Memory add to cost. Memory my be cheaper to buy local later. I max out on my memory up front of buying and add extras later.
HP and Compaq. May be some other low priced options. I not sure.
I have always like IBM and have two Laptops. But, after they sold out to "Lenovo" I wait and see. But, Lenovo Laptops may be $800 at the least maybe more.

this is a brand new basic dell computer and if you add $27 it can burn dvds as well.

anyways if you want the same computer but already used but refurbished by dell you can check out the dell outlet:
