He hates his office job and if he does this course he'd be a qualified pilot. It seems he can get the money from loans but he'd be in big trouble if it all goes wrong. He's dead set on it and the course starts in a few months. He's 30 years old with no prior experience of aviation or engineering.

He's passed the flight schools aptitude test so is technically approved to be enrolled.

I don't know what the job market is like in the UK, but here in the US, I'm told that brand-new pilots out of school earn about $23-30,000 per year. And at that, they'll be flying for small companies in smaller planes doing the last-minute trips that nobody else wants. They also do a lot of teaching of other students who want to learn to fly. It will take time to work their way up into the higher paying jobs with the airlines, and that's not guaranteed in any way.

If your friend loves to fly, is single, and can afford this, let him go chase this dream. If he thinks he can do this and support a family, tell him to go see a career counselor and get the cold hard facts on the job first before he spends his money.

If flying is his dream then go for it. You should always follow your dreams. If everything went wrong - at least he would know he had tried. And I'm sure he could always go back to an office job....yawn! Best wishes and good luck to your friend. x

Hi, I know it is a pilots course, but that sounds like a lot of money....but maybe its not. Perhaps he should contact the CAA before he makes his next step.
