Sure, for many reasons from inability to afford it to self-destructive issues to seeing a midwife instead to feeling that pregnancy is not in itself an dangerous state that needs to be routinely medically monitored.

I fell in the last category -- if you know you're healthy, there's really no point to going to the doctor. Also, there's so much you can do yourself. Want to check for protein in your urine? You can buy the sticks. Want to check your blood pressure? Buy a cuff or go to a pharmacist where they have a machine (and avoid "white coat syndrome" while you're at it.) Etc.

Women in our culture are so cut off from their bodies and so trusting of doctors as holders of this supposedly Mysterious and Difficult Knowledge that they don't realize that we really are able to be aware of when we're not well, and that pregnancy care is really not rocket science. Some of it can be harmful as well. See "The Myth of Prenatal Care" by Thomas Strong.

Some people see a midwife instead of a doctor. Personally, I found that to be a better option than an OB.

I have known some women who did "unassisted childbirth" where they did not have a doctor or midwife for prenatal care and had unattended homebirths.

If the mother is healthy and is well-educated about pregnancy and birth, it can have a good outcome.

Yeah, I know of one just recently who didnt go until someone forced her at 8 months and she ended up having gestational diabetes that could have been controlled, her baby was over 10 pounds because of that, and she had high blood pressure and was extremely overweight. All dangerous for the baby. All of these things could have been controlled or prevented if she would have had the guidance and care of a doctor.

Probably. Some people may not have the insurance or money to foot the bills, some are also scared of doctors. Its sad. If its due to financial issues, there are ways of getting around it since there are many free clinics out there.

yeah some people do what is called UP (unassisted pregnancy). They just trust that pregnancy is a normal, natural thing and doesn't need medical intervention. They're a lot more brave than I am though because I would never risk something happening to me or the baby just because I purposely avoided medical care.

Alot of people do. I recently saw a woman on t.v. that never went to the doctor until she went into labor. That doesn't mean it's the healthiest decision for mom or baby.

I knew someone at my old job that didn't go to the doctor until she delivered the baby. The baby was totally healthy and there were no complications. Good luck!

yes, it happens everyday....some will have healthy babies, some other will develop serious conditions that could have been treated....I wouldn't risk it anyway, my daughter's life is too precious to me, unfortunately most of the time is because people dont have money to afford it.....pregnant women should have free assistance and consultation, poor, unemployed, without insurance ones at least.
