My sister is moving to Florida w/ her child. They have come upon hard times & I Mom lives in Tampa,Fl & is willing to take her in, but they'd have to sleepinher livingroom until she finds work & gets a place. She really doesn't have much of value to take with her yet she insists on lugging her tvs, kitchen table, chairs, microwave, etc with her--but she's BROKE & has nowhere to put it. I tried to convince her that these items are non essential & is better off packing most of thier clothes & just start all over. She stresses that she doesnt want to have to rebuy things she already has. She's nervous & maybe it's a sentimental thing shes hanging onto-but it makes no sense to hold on to those things. its a new life & i think she should just start w/ a clean slate. She driving her old car down there-i say, pack it up and keep it moving. She wants to hussle up some $ to get a self haul truck that will be expensive to move crap she just doesnt need. what can i do to help her wake up?

Sorry to hear what your sister is going through, but she may just have to sell everything until she gets back on her feet. Whether its a yard sale, classified ads or e-bay. Because storage cost will be an unwanted annoyance.

tell her to pack her clothes, her child clothes, pictures and books, music and some kids things, toys, etc. and start over when she is able to ....sell the old things that she has and then she will have some money until she gets settled....it costs too much to move household items and it is easier to buy new when she is ready...she will not need those extra things and storage is a problem...once she is working and saving, finds a new place it will be fun to start new and build a new and exciting life for her and her child......

I know what is like to loose everything and want to try and salvage something, but you are right she needs to let go and start a new.........But how to convince her of this is not going to be easy as she is hurting and frighten...Try sitting her down and calmly do a pro and con list.

think your absolutely right . tell herthat by moving all that stuff it;s really expensive and with the money spent on moving it, she may be able to buy some new stuff. besides, she can always go back and get it at a later time right ? :)

Schedule a yard sale of your own goods, invite her to come and help you with it, after she packs up and is ready to go, and have her come with the goodies in her car or uhaul. Then steer the visitors to your yard sale to her goodies.
