I live in Rotterdam and one of the interesting things is the harbor. We have the biggest harbor in the world and you can make a boat trip through it, which is fun if you are into that.

If you like architecture you will like Rotterdam. It is a modern city and different then Amsterdam in buildings and atmosphere.
Shopping you can do in the city center, there is the lijnbaan, the 'koopgoot' (literally translated as 'shopping gutter', a nickname given by the people) which are some shopping street names in the center.
Also check out the 'nieuwe binnenweg' which is a street just going out of the center, they have a few nice shops.

But to be honest, I agree with the others. Personally I think Utrecht is more interesting, it is a very old city with canals and is very charming, with a lot of nice shops in the city center.

Maastricht is nice and beautifull but the athmosphere is more poche and kinda elite.

And then there is also Den Haag (The Hague) which is only half an hour with the train from Amsterdam. Den Haag is an old city and our government seats there. Den Haag is attached to Scheveningen which is at the sea and has a nice promenade and beach. Even with crap weather this is a nice place to visit, you can take the tram from Den Haag centre and in half an hour you are at the beach.

I agree with CbopXB. Maastricht rocks! I am studying here now and it's a great place. I was just in Rotterdam 3 weeks ago with a few friends and it was fun cause we went to a soccer game and at night, went to a few bars. Otherwise, it wasn't anything special. I would say Maastricht would be the way to go. It's easy to get to Maastricht from Amsterdam by train. Should take about 3 hours to get to. Lots of bars, the shopping is great, the restaurants are magnificent, the people are so pleasant and it's a very pretty and clean city. If you pick me for the best answer, I'll give you my contact info and I'll show you around. : )

Rotterdam is nice, but I think it's too modern. You should visit Maastricht. It is located in the southern most tip in the Netherlands. It is an amazing city with great shopping and wonderful nightlife. It has such a wonderful old world feel to it. When you go there, you should just wander around the labrintyh of streets and get lost or people watch at a cafe in the center square. It's great. If you do decide to go to Rotterdam, go check out the cube houses. Those are really cool.

IF you and your friends are either architecture geeks or engineering geeks than Rotterdam is fun...otherwise it's not.
If you're looking to explore holland try visiting Den Haag, Delft, Haarlem, Edam, or Maastricht.
Brugge is a great day trip as well.

If you are looking for a nice old shopping center (like Amsterdam, Delft, Den Haag, Utrecht) you won't find it. The Germans bombed it in all WW2.
In the harbor is a museum ship called, De Buffel. This is worth while.
