I just got an older laptop and was wondering whether it'd be better to run XP or 2000. Its a Toshiba Portege 7200 with P3 650 mhzand 320mb RAM. I'm running XP right now and its a little bit slow, but bearable but i'm wondering if Win 2000 would be better.

The only things that are important are:

1) I'd like to do basic audio recording on it
2) I need to be able to use wireless internet thru a PCMCIA card.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your responses and suggestions to boost the RAM. The spec sheet on this computer says that the max RAM it can take is 320.

Can I put more in?

1. 320 mb ram is max. which u've reached
>> senseless 2 ask you to add !

2. u'r os was originally win 95 / win 98se / win nt4

hence choice of win xp as os will naturally slow down pc
no, win 2000 will not be better

better would be win 98se or even win me
> both support wi-fi pcmcia cards

dunno wat sortta software u usin for audio recording, check out if it's compliant to win 98se / win me

... decide accordingly !

windows 2000 and windows xp has the same basic configuration requirements..so basically both will be more or less the same..and as some have already suggested it will be a good idea to increase ur RAM..that will show a significant difference in the speed

I would suggest using Win2000 on your laptop. I have one computer at my house that has Win2000 with 320 MB of RAM and a 350Mhz processor, and it works just fine.

When I was going to college, there was several computers there that had XP with 256MB RAM and 600 Mhz processors. Those seemed to work kind of slow.

Windows 2000 is more stable than xp sometimes, although if you are wirless networking it, you may have to check if the network is compatible with 2000.

Have you defragged XP? Or Disk cleanup? This may be why your laptop if slow. (if you want to know, open my pc and right click on your hard drive and select propertites run cleanup there. Defrag is under Tools)

The most important thing you should do is to add more RAM to it.
