Why did parent always put fruit and nuts in your stockings at christmas you could of just got them from the kitchen had you wanted to.

That is a tradition from the great depression. People barely had enough money for food so they never got fruits or nuts because they were way to expensive. So it was considered a rare treat to get an orange or an apple or nuts. Therefore Santa usually left one or two in a child's stocking on Christmas Eve. It was one the best gifts ever according to my parents.

Years ago fruit and nuts were very expensive and families could not afford to buy it like today so at Christmas it was and still is a tradition to have fruit and nuts in a stocking to give some healthy food we also have sixpence at the bottom of our stocking. However today it is filled with not just fruit and nuts it has small gifts and sweets in it you lucky people!
It is nice that some of those traditions still hold also leaving santa something to eat and drink.

Never had fruit and nuts for Christmas in my life. In fact, never had a stocking, although I got loads of presents.

Be grateful,some people in the world would consider fruit and nuts manner from heaven,plus they had more important things to spend there money on at Christmas like booze!!

I've never actually used the stocking, just leave the prezzies under the Christmas tree... Only hang it up for decoration lol

Its a traditon that comes from a time when fruits and nuts were a luxury not an every day thing.

I was brought up by my mother who was a single parent, so I didnt even get an xmas stocking.
