Mine are soldered together with the wedding band in back and engagement ring in front.

The band then the ring. I heard about the band being closest to the heart, but the engagement ring after the band is thought towards protection over the marriage because it protects the band.

Some people put the diamond on first then the band, because when your married you hve it on already when he puts the ring on, engagement first.
with the same concept, some put the band on so the engagement ring is in front....i think it looks better this way to me

In the South we wear our wedding band first (closest to your heart) and then the engagement ring. :)
