Sounds like your door switch is out of alignment or gunked up with soap, fabric softner etc. As far as the water level goes, I'd say your selector switch is bad or the diaphram itself is bad. Call an appliance repair man if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Shame on those advising to "buy a new one"!!! Their solution is quick with YOUR pocket book.
If you have a front loader, you may check the hinges on the door and see if it has come loose so it wont line up with the door catch.
If you have a top loader, I cant see any reason to bang on the door...so, I assume its a front loader.
Good luck and be careful of some of the "experts" here offering to send you off to spend your money on new appliances...a front loader can be repaired at less cost than a new washer.

you may need a new door catch there not dear and you could do the job yourself just remember how you took it off and put the new one on in reverse
