A good leader would never ask a follower to do something he/she wouldn't do themselves. (i.e. Iraq war)
A good follower is one who obeys yet questions when a leader is making a mistake, and is heard by the leader.
If you think I am making reference to anyone in particular, you are right.

I think the best leaders are the natural born leaders. You can tell at a very young age who they are. They are the one leader all the other kids to do things. Leaders know who to get people to follow them. They have something about them that just draws you to them. The quality of a leader will be determined by how he/she uses his power. It is very hard for a leader to follow others. That is how you know you are a leader.
A follower is not just a doormat as some might picture. A follower is loyal and humble. They usual get along with people because they are not arguing about who is leading or making the final decision. They can be kicked back and relaxed. A good follower though is one who follows what he/she believes. They also know when not to follow and when it is wrong to go with the flow.

I would say that the supremely important quality of a leader is to attempt to make or mould the followers to become leaders themselves. In others words the leader should make himself redundant and the next best takes over.
Likewise the much needed quality of a follower is to follow constantly the methodology of the success of his/her leader and mould himself/herself into an able successor.
If I may add this single most important aspect of leadership is wanting in today`s political leadership. Each one clings to his/her chair so much !
By the same token the whole world should stand up in unison and cheer a great individual, generally known by name ....Bill Gates .... for voluntarily stepping down and allow the next best to take over.
and ... take over another equally responsible leadership in his Trust activities . I am sure Bill gates will churn out some of the best Human talents as leaders in the coming years in other areas ... be it HIV field, Education,

The quality of a leader is ability to do what is right regardless of popularity . Quality of a follower is ability to recognize the ultimate goal of leader.

i would like to share to you my favorite qoute on leadership by Rosalynn Carter:
" A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they dont necessarily want to go but ought to be."
A good Follower, believes in the goal as set by the leader, willing and ready to carry on with the vision despite the absence of the leader.
