is there a substance i can apply to the base of my large very old carob tree to prevent sucker growth?

the tree is over 100 yrs old and develops suckers at he base very quickly. i was thinking of a tar like substance that would not harm the tree that would prohibit the suckers from growing through

No, there isn't. Stay away from them with chemicals. Take care of them the old-fashion way: clip them off with pruners. A few times a year should be plenty.

Try fertilizing it. Sucker growth (epicormic branching) is very often an indication of an unhealthy tree.
