googone works wonders, thats what i used when i was painting my bathroom.
plus it doesnt' stink to high heaven.

Try a product like OOPS. Or you can use steel wool(since your removing the paint anyway.) I removed several dried layers of paint off my wood trim with steel wool and hot water.

You can buy lots of things that will remove the glue but try WD40 first and it is probably in one of the kitchen cabinets and if its not there check the garage

Yes, this is a common problem for the DIYer which is easily remedied. The correct technique is to go off for the weekend and whilst you are away get one of your mates to torch the place. Then sit back and watch the insurance company sort it all out for you.
