I like Dyson. It is really great, easy to use. easy to empty, and everything you need is on board.
Kirby is good, but if you need to repair it, it will cost a lot. The machine itself is also expensive and it is not that great either. I used, I have it. but now I only use the Dyson.
I have had the Dyson for over three years, and I have not had any trouble with it so far. I like the idea that you can empty it, and you never need any bags. There are several models to suit you, including one for those who have pets.
It has a long hose, which means I don't have to carry it to vacuum the stairs. If you have pets, try it and look, you will see how much hair it picks up. Everything in it way.
The only negative thing I found is that it doesn't go easily under small area, but that too is easily solved since the hose and everything is on board and easily changeable.
You will love it.

SEBO is the world's best vacuum cleaner. I went through cleaners like other people go through toilet paper. My dirt Devil lasted about 6 hours. I have bought just about every plastic crap offered in the store. The longest I ever had a cleaner was a year until now. I bought a SEBO same as commercial windsor-and I have had it for 3 years problem free. It is truly idiot proof. It will turn itself off when your daughter runs over her clothes, its belt is lifetime guaranteed and goes flat to vacuum under bed. I wish I could sell these. I tell everyone how much I love my Vacuum.
By the way it cost about 400 for the base model but I easily spent that in 2 years and alot of frustration. Well worth it.
Also the way I discovered this was by talking to a vacuum repairman. He had intimate knowledge with what breaks and what doesn't. Try talking to someone who knows, You might be surprised by what you find out from a professional.

I'm a firm believer in the Dyson vaccuum cleaner. They work AWESOME! Easy to use. Easy to empty. They really don't loose suction. I love vaccuuming the house with this one! They have a couple different models. The "Ball" isn't as great as it sounds. I don't believe so any way. It feels akward to move and top heavy.

The best vacuum you can buy regardless of how much money you have is the Kirby Sentria. Its very pricey though and probably not for everyone but to answer the question directly, its the best.

Bosch makes a great vacuum as well and comes in close second.

Miele is a close 3'rd

Dyson is another good solid vacuum. Affordable to most.

I really like my Oreck, especially the two annual check-ups included in the purchase price. It's got great suction, and really will go from carpet to tile floor without any adjustments and spray the dust all over.
I have a friend who swears by Dyson.
I have come to believe that with vaccuum cleaners you get what you pay for quality wise. But if you compare the initial purchase price for, say, an Oreck - to the cumulative price of replacing the cheaper ones - you probably come out about even - without the aggravation of having to go buy new ones every few months.

I wonder if all those who have suggested a best actually own one. I own a Miele canister...very powerful suction, very efficient, very quiet. So quiet you can vacuum while the baby sleeps. Kirby and Dyson are good but heavy and make noise similar to a semi tractor trailer. As usual, quality is more expensive, but quality lasts and is less expensive in the long run.
