I think a dressy suite with the appropriate fit and accessories would be just as suitable (no pun intended!) as a semi-formal dress. My only word of advise is do not wear a strapless dress/gown if you are having a sit down dinner....I hear it makes you look nude from across the table if the center pieces are larger/taller than flat. Relax and have a good time!

Evening gown to be plain and simple. Don't worry about color, but be conservative in cut and form. There is going to be a ton of navy, black and deep reds and purples, so if you want to fit in, you might want to go with that. But color would be your way of sticking out in a crowd of bland if you wanted to.
As far as accessories, do wear a nice stand of pearls or something comprable - nothing to "blingy" so to speak. Gloves would be optional and truly depend on the type of dress you do decide to wear.
Ultimately, your wearing a suit would not be appropriate.
Have a great time.

These people are very conservative in their dress so women shouldn't wear anything too revealing. Black is best, either full length or cocktail length. For men, a tux and a white formal shirt and black bow tie and cummerbund. No ruffles and no colors, please. Good black shoes highly polished and black socks.

A tuxedo. That's where the term 'black tie affair' comes from. :)
