I pierced 3 times on each side in 1975 before it was "cool" and some did get a little infected but healed quickly. Have your friend use a good antibacterial liquid soap and COOL water. (Cool water quickly reduces pain, whereas warm or hot water increases nerve stimulation and thus pain in most people.) Let the stream of water wash off all visible particulates. * Pick out any imbedded material if possible.* (SEE WARNING BELOW) Pat dry and apply tea tree oil. Because tea tree oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia) is a natural antibacterial, antifungal, kills staph, strep, e.coli, candidis albicans (yeast infections), and is also a wonderful antiseptic and numbing agent (dentists used tea tree oil before Novacaine in many countries). As this dries, apply a triple antibiotic ointment and allow wound to remain open to the air.
WARNING: if the skin wound is very contaminated and if it has been five or more years since her last tetanus shot, immediately contact a clinic or doctor. It's true, there is a patient confidentiality law that prohibits the sharing of information with anyone besides the patient (if she is over 18), or do make sure she sees a free clinic as someone else recommended. DO NOT
ATTEMPT TO PICK OUT ANY DEBRIS IF THE EAR IS SEVERLY INFECTED.
You cannot compromise your health because you fear someone's being upset or angry. One of these days healed or not Dad will notice the other piercings! You cannot hide the obvious and really what is more important? Obviously your friends health or you wouldn't be asking.
Be well.

Take the ear rings out and leave them out, make sure that she cleans them at least three times per day, with something like Witch Hazel and then she should probably put some triple Antibiotic Cream such as neosporin on it every night when she goes to bed. This will help the infection, if this doesn't help few in the first few days you should definitely call the doctors messing around with your ears is not a good idea if the infection should move into her ear than she could lose her hearing. Best of Luck

If she JUST did it she can clean it loads with isopropyl alcohol. IT WILL HURT. However, if it didn't, and infection sets it, this MUST be taken care of.
Getting in trouble from her parents is probably better than a hospital stay.
DOn't listen to anyone who just says "oh - eat this - it's a natural antibiotic". Keep in mind before penicillin bacterial infection was the leading cause of death. It is serious and should be treated that way - by a doctor. A real doctor.

Gang Grene? Thata a little far out there don't you think? Every household should have hydrogen peroxide, it should do the trick. Use it a few times a day and wash your ears in the shower once a day with soap. Be gentle with your ears until they heal.

gangrene? What the heck did she use to punch holes into her ears....a rusty nail? Is the infection on the outside of the ear tissue or on the inside...like an earache?

Never mind...her best and safest way to prevent or get rid of an infection is to go see a doctor. Her dad doesn't need know depending on her age. And if she can't pay for it, find a free clinic.

OMG...the stupid things people will do to be "cool".

Gangrene is a serious infection caused by contamination of the bloodstream via a cut. It's unlikely your friend got it just from piercing her own ears. However she should see the doctor regardless to get the infection treated. The doctor does not have to tell her parents due to confidentiality rules.

I pierced a few holes in my ears myself and one of them got infected, but it went away in a day or so. If it is not going away, she must go to the doctor. She needs antibiotics and you cannot get them over the counter. They are a prescription. So what if her dad is mad, he'll get over it. He will be more upset if she doesn't get it taken care of and it turns into something worse.

Bath the ear with hydrogen peroxide several times a day. This should heal it quickly.

You have got to be kidding? Well, let's see....you think her father hasn't SEEN her botched piercing job or is she hiding under the bed until it heals?

She HAS to see a doctor before it gets worse/spreads.
