1. Don't assume that because he is having trouble communicating that he is stupid (he is the one attempting to communicate remember).
2. He knows it is difficult so look him straight in the eye and tell him clearly that you are having problems understanding him and get him to write it down.
3. Don't be embarrassed, you are both in the same boat.
4. Just stay relaxed, smile and treat him exactly the same as you would any other person and don't talk to him as if he is a child (it is very easy talk in a condescending manner).

I would politely ask the person to repeat the question as I didn't catch it the first time. If I still couldn't understand it I'd ask them to write it down.
Obviously I'd assess the type and level of their disability first. It's often difficult to tell if someone can write or not, especially if they're wheelchair bound, as they may not have the use of their arms OR legs. They might have one of those Stephen Hawking computer things, so if I didn't understand I'd get them to type it into the robot voice thing.

Consider how you would feel in their position, then think about the best way you would like to be treated and do that. The person in question obviously sees you as a person whose advice they trust and they trust you to come up with a solution to both problems; the question and the communication difficulty,do your best, that will be plenty good enough!.

I would do what I do with my friend who has a speech impediment. I listen very closely and focus solely on their voice, usually if you ask them to repeat at least one time (and I know they usually don't mind repeating themselves because they understand they are hard to understand) then you can usually figure it out. If not, try to ask clue based questions to figure out what they were saying. As long as you are polite about it they shouldn't have a problem.

if you had a problem understanding what that person was saying you could ask him/her to write it down,,, if you knew that person was coming over i would hope you would have done your homework...they may use sign language such as makaton or other forms of communication such as picture books. The thing is to be patient and understanding.

Be patient and ask them to repeat it until I could understand. I would explain I was having difficulty but that we could get through it.

I know what your saying....it is hard and I guess all you can do is let them know you don't understand. My guess is they probably cant write if they can give them paper and pen. or ask them to show you keep in mind things may be hints to the bigger picture they are trying to show you.....and by all means let the person that is responsible for them know, they may be able to translate for you.....but most of all it's important to show patience! good luck. :o)

We had a problem with a woman who came into work and couldn't make herself understand. She used to become more and more frustrated. You just have to be patient and hope you can guess what they want.
