The Erechtheion - part of the Parthenon complex on the Acropolis in Athens.

As has been mentioned, the Erechtheion on the Acropolis of Athens. These maidens are termed the caryatids, where statues of women are used as structural pillars.

The idea has been copied down through time, for both interior and exterior decorative effect (mainly non-structural).

A caryatid seems to have been a nut-tree goddess/nymph. See Wikipedia article:
