My wife and I had this discussion with the Pediatrician (sp?).

Obviously, breast feeding is best.

After that, we were told to try any Milk-based formula with Iron. If there are complications, then you have to begin with trial and error.

Some babies prefer the taste ofone formula over the other. Sometimes, a brand of formula just won't sit well with a baby (for my newest, it was Nestle Good Start. She would throw it up, get a runny nose, and act like she had a cold. We'd use a different brand and she was fine).

In the end, we just used whatever brand we had coupons for. Similac sends $5 to $10 coupons if you sign up on their website. Enfamil sends a few $5 coupons then only $1 after that if you sign up on their website. Nestle sent us a few $10 coupons (but we had problems with that brand so we gave them away. There is nothing wrong with Nestle, I'm just mentioning this so you know that babies may have problems with a brand of formula for no reason).

My Pediatrician also said that there is no problems with switching brands of formula. She just warned us that some babies will prefer the taste of one brand and not drink the other brands. We haven't had that issue yet though.

Breastmilk is best but I couldn't breastfeed so I use Enfamil. I didn't try anything else but if I could go back though I would try something less expensive. All of the brands even the cheapest ones have everything a baby needs.. DHA/ARA/Iron. I read an article that said that cheaper brands weren't any less nutritional than the more expensive. I never changed because my son was already use to Enfamil. The only reason you would have to use a certain brand was if your baby had a special need and ifyou thought that might be the case then it's best to talk to your Dr.

I agree with the breastmilk, but if you cannot do that, formula can be very trial by error. You just have to see which one your child tolerates. I have found that Nestle Good Start is a great formula, but I use a store brand for my son. It is much cheaper and he tolerates it very well.

I tried several brands before I finally settled (or I should say, my baby settled) on Parent's Choice Organic from Wal-Mart. It's less expensive than most name brands, is organic, and for my baby, at least, more tolerable. It's like anything else, you have to shop around and try what's best for your baby. But, don't dismiss a store brand...I chose this one because it's Organic and that's important to our family. Good luck!!

I'l assume that breastfeeding is not an option.

Soy-based formulas are good for children with digestive problems, particularly children with colic. It also builds foundation blocks for a healthy cancer-free lifestyle.
