That's a hard question to answer, because though saying sorry is the only thing most people can come up with. It never really is enough, in this kind of situation. You say sorry when you broke the lamp or a window playing baseball.
Telling someone your sorry for their loss, just doesn't seem good enough, but then what else is there to say.

I suspect the most comforting is to touch within yourself the pain of such a loss, and convey this with a look and a nod of understanding how much pain the person is in.
If appropriate, a gentle hug, and share the pain from the person as one cries with the person.... if one is open to such show of emotion.
Words are ways in which those reluctant to share emotion can convey sympathy. Sharing ones emotional congruency is the best and this requires no words.
Peace

" Iam sorry for your lose" that is the only thing you can say, anything else would be insincere, you don't know how they feel, unless you have experienced the same thing. So, just say you are very sorry for her/his lose, and be available as a friend to listen if they need to talk or cry or whatever. Good luck and God bless you.

You tell them that you are sorry that their friend died. That's it. There is nothing you can say that will make the situation better. All you can do is to be there for them when they need you. Do not smother the person but just be there for them.

It really is hard to know what to do. All you really can do is tell them how sorry you are for their loss and the pain they must be feeling. Ask if there is anything that you can do for them and be availabe to listen when they want to talk. And hugs can help too.
