Try the Freecycle boards in your area. These are Yahoo groups that were started to keep things out of landfills by giving people a place to recycle them to others for free. The links below will take you to the ones for NYC & the Bronx.

For additional board areas in the NY area just search at:

You will need to join the group, simple process. Then just post a Wanted and explain that you need books and for what. People in our area give books away a lot, some are even book sellers that clearing inventory on new items. You may need to be willing to go get them but some people are willing to deliver.
In our area, the libraries also do sales twice a year for kids books they are discarding at 10-cents to 25-cents each. You could do a pennies for books program where parents can drop their spare change in a jar at the school for this.
Many companies also have a community programs fund. You could call around or check websites for the businesses in your community (bookstores & grocery stores that carry books are good options) to see if they offer such programs. I know one local grocery in our area gives a budget to each store every year that they are to allot to small programs in their local communities.
Do you have any second hand bookstores in your area that give trade value for books? If so, you could do a book drive for all types of book (child or adult) and then take the adult level books to trade for kid books.
You could try the websites below as well. I have no idea if these programs work, but these sites allow you to post as a teacher for items your classroom needs, then people who want to help schools can find your request & choose to donate goods or money.

Well I know this isn't what you want to hear but unless you teach in an affluent district the odds are you are going to have to spend the money yourself. I go to garage sales, 1/2 price book stores, used book stores, order from the Scholastic mail order company- the ones you got in school that the teacher sent in and they sent you the books in two weeks. You might try to write a grant or visit some businesses to see if they will donate books or money to purchase them. Maybe they would put a barrel out for you to get people to donate.

Hi,
I have noticed that I have a great library by just collecting books over the summer Each summer in most towns there are yard sales or rummage sales Here I find books for sometimes 10 cents to 25 cents Also some of the libraries now have library sales and sometimes you can get books for a little more money Remember, when you have books for one year, you can continue your quest for more books
Good luck in your search

go to your city library and ask for help in getting these students a library card, sometimes they will send out a mobile van with books for the school..you can get books that will fit your students, age level and then once a week or more, the mobile van will come on campus and your students can go and pick a book..the library may donate some books for you to have in your class. also post a free ad on craigslist requesting free books...craigslist has sections like volunteers, free, wanted. and those areas would be the ones to ask for donations...if i was not so far away i would get you some books for you sorry.... you might also ask the state rehab for help for books

Do an all-call email (if your district allows it) asking other teachers for donations. More experienced teachers have far more books than they know what to do with. Ask the school's librarian to have dibs on any discards. Ask parents to donate gently used books. Look up book publishing companies and ask for an "examination copy" of leveled readers. I think Harcourt or Houghton Mifflin (one of the H's) is currently offering examination copies of leveled readers. You might even ask a local elementary school for donations of discards or teacher books since your students have exceptionalities. They may have books that are on more appropriate levels. Good luck!

Have you spoken w/ the principal? Is your school a Title I school. The Special Education department should have funds to help you with this. Talk to your librarian, some books that are rarely checked out can be given to the classroom teacher to use for a class library.

I wish I knew but the only way to get books donated is... going to the local library... to the various community colleges... to the various and local Colleges and Universitiy libraries and ask them if they have books that they discard.. They ALL do from time to time.

Chips and carrots are constantly super quiet! :D ok, no longer rather. How approximately some thing with somewhat much less risky sugars than doughnuts? some end result, like bananas and oranges could be sturdy.
