I have just hired one for the first time, and I wondered if it is customary to tip them, and if so what percentage?

Ok I thought I might add some details:
1. I live in the UK, don't know if that makes a difference.
2. I only pay him 5 pounds anyway which I think is very low

No way! Have you worked out how long it takes him to clean your windows - say 10 mins x £5 (and this is cash in hand). He's on a good wage so only give him a tip at Christmas, that's what most people do.

It's probably a good idea to give a tip. The amount would depend on how many windows you have and how long it takes them to do them. There's too much tipping expected these days, but if you don't tip you get poor service. It's a kind of blackmail, sadly.

I tip at Christmas - usually a box of chocolates or something on those lines. They don't expect tips as its their living. You don't tip the teller at the bank or the person at the supermarket checkout!

a Christmas box is acceptable. But on a per visit basis, no, just pay him as normal.
Just don't TIP him off his ladder pmsl.

tip them if you feel they did a good job and you feel the need to be generous, or just give them some nice cool drinks midway thru the job. or tip like you are at a resturant. tipping in this case is a personal choice, if you start you will have to do it all the time or just pay them well

Isn't is customary to have sexual intercourse with the window cleaner? You in your negligee at the door and him in his tight jeans? Or is that just my window cleaner!

er.. as if you don't pay him/her enough?
call me stingy, but I think they are very well paid for what they do and how much time and effort they put in. I might tip them if it's Christmas :P

If the groomer does a good job and you are happy with their work....tip. Also, if the fit you in where they really had no time, tip. My dog groomer charges $28.00 and I tip $3.00 to $5.00.
