Does it matter what the REAL purpose was of the Iraq war?
The truth is, the damage has already been done and many thousands have been killed.

If anyone cares to remember, we went into Iraq to topple Saddam and used a variety of excuses which, I'm sure most believed. No president, not even Bush would have been so stupid as to claim victory 100 days later (mission accomplished) if they had believed we would be there 5 years later.
The Iraq war started with honorable and good intentions but has since turned into a policing action. The US and coalition forces are trying to prop up the Iraq government so they can survive the onslaught of terrorists and islamic fanatics.
If we leave, it's a toss up who will eventually be in control of the country.... In my opinion, the worst would be Iran!

Some analysts, such as Noam Chomsky, posit that a state of perpetual war is an aid to (and is promoted by) the powerful members of dominant political and economic classes, helping maintain their positions of economic and political superiority.
Some have also suggested that entering a state of perpetual war becomes progressively easier in a modern democratic republic such as the United States due to the continuing development of interlocking relationships between those who benefit directly from war and the large and powerful companies that indirectly benefit and shape the presentation of the effects and consequences of war (i.e., the formation of a military-industrial complex). There has been some criticism from anti-war activists and Bush critics, for example, that the Bush administration's ties to Halliburton influenced the decision to go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan. These claims have been pointedly rejected by the White House

I,m inclined to agree with the answer to an earlier question
that it is to do with world ecomnomy. If Sadam was going to change the selling of oil from the dollar to euro the dollar would collaspe on the world market. It would also explain why the british will not join the eroupean currencyto protect their american friends(the oil companies) It is also strange that Tony Blair took his country into
war against the wishes of his own people on a pack of false
intellegence doucuments british and american.Strange bed fellows Repubiican Bush and Solicialist Blair (Sorry Labour)

I wish I knew. I think that Bush thought it would be an easy target and the Taliban and Bin Laden would be afraid after Iraq was invaded. The result was the exact opposite. There are more terrorists than ever because of this war and Bin Laden is still out there plotting more attacks. It was a totally bungled scheme.

Its simple, ask yourself this question; if the USA held all the worlds oil reserves and oil could not be found anywhere else, would the USA still have the same interest in the region. Or would we see the middle east from the same perspective we see Africa, no oil no war. It is OIL my friend, and the oil profits that make the middle east important to the USA.

Saddam was allowing his country to be used as a terrorist training base. Also, he did have WMD's and a news conference a couple of month's ago showed all the chemical and biological weapons they found recently. Saddam was being defiant to UN resolutions so the USA and our trusted allies went in and did the work lazy countries wouldn't do and toppled a dictator who was head of a murderous regime. Wait, that kind of sounds like Kim Jong IL too doesn't it?

I do think that was some human compassion behind it by trying to get rid of Sadam and bring peace to such a trouble region but I also believe that there was more sinister reasons behind it as ther normally always are in War

Big Dubya wanted to be known as a war president.... He claims the Iraqi People wanted freed from the evil tyrant...
Personally, considering the sects, Sadam was doing a hell of a job keeping them in check... Being a Sunni himself he kept the Sh it-ites under an iron fist....

Why not re phrase your question, stating what you believe is the cause and then seek opinions on your perspective? Don't forget that there is lots of oil in Alaska, Colorado, off shore Texas - and we have the ability to get it.
