You could get loads of recipes, and step by step instructions on Cooks.com on line and it is cheaper than buying a cookbook. But a good cook book for beginners and a classic is the Joy of Cooking, here are the details of the latest reprinting.
Scribner, October 2006
Hardcover, 1152 pages
ISBN-10: 0-7432-4626-8
ISBN-13: 978-0-7432-4626-2

You did say cookery though, which leads me to think you might be from the UK, and any of Jamie Oliver's cookbooks are pretty simple to work with, I liked Happy Days best. Also, you have a publisher called DK over there that has several really good step by step cookbooks...I would look them up on Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble..

Hope this helps...

You have not mentioned which country you belong to - without which it is impossible to suggest a suitable cookbook ! What would be ideal for an American would be useless for an Indian, and vice versa !
...So, suggest that you go to Yahoo! Search. Type 'Basic+cookery+________+Book' [ with the name of your country filled into the blank] into its search panel. Click 'Enter'. A page listing URLs detailing all the available books on your kind of cooking, along with the publishers' names plus addresses, will open up. Go through each one of them - until you find one that best suits your needs.
Happy hunting !

The Joy of Cooking. It's the classic and it even tells you how to boil an egg properly. You can go from beginner to advanced and they explain everything in the book--how something works and why.
