Its called the Cetane rating. Just like Octane. The number system is different. In the US the quality is half that of the quality in europe. That is one of the reasons we don't have as many diesel cars. This should be changing with new government regulations. The quality of diesel should be increasing to that of Europes.

You have number 1 diesel and number 2 diesel and now low sulpher diesel is coming to the USA.

octane rating has nothing to do with quality.
Octane rating is a way to rate the amount of compression needed to spontaneously combust gasoline.
The lower the octane the less amount of compression needed to ignite the fuel without a spark.
Cars that knock on lower octane have a high compression ratio.
