I just broke out the sewing machine I got last year for Christmas. I have only sewn a pillow and a tote bag back in junior high so I am not experienced! What would be a good starter project for me? ( besides a pillow or tote bag...lol)

Skirts are real easy and so are cafe curtains for your kitchen. Most of the Simplicity patterns are just that - simple. Good luck and have fun. Remember, if you screw something up, don't get frustrated. Just rip out the seams and start over! This is relaxing - keep saying this to yourself!

LOL! I was going to suggest a tote bag until you put that caveat in! I guess I'm just a bag freak, but there are so many things you can do creatively with a bag to expand your skills -- add a patch pocket. Add an inside pocket. Add trim. Learn to add a zipper to the pocket -- or the bag itself. Learn how to make a tiny little zippered pocket for a purse sewing kit (or to keep your tampons and kotex in). Or . . . (-: Yep, I'm a bag freak.

Something you can use is really the best though. A knit tank top would be a good clothing start, because the fabric doesn't slip, it's rather forgiving, and you can wear it right away. And I think the whole project takes maybe two hours for a two-piece top start to finish (not including pre-shrinking your fabric).

The important thing is to take your time, cut carefully, and don't be afraid to rip out the seam and do it right. Good luck and have fun!

Place mats would be great as they only require a straight stitch, things like a table runner would be good. You can also do simple things like straight skirts and pj pants out of flannel..they are a really easy pattern.

Try a stuffed animal. Thats how I started learning! A little harder than what you've been doing so far, but not too hard.

it depends on your preference.if you like to do some craft work, you can make a case for your art stuff, stationaries. if you have a pet cat or dog, you can make them some costumes for this halloween. for my earliest sewing project i made a case for tissue papers (box).
