The food colouring solution, mentioned by the 2nd answer, is the best way. You can dye a lighter flower almost any colour that way. Or, you could preserve them by spray-painting them black and then covering them with acrylic or polymer! That's a "forever" gift!

Depending on what colour it is to begin with is how dark you would be able to dye it. For example, you can't go from white to black, just like you can't go from black to white in one step with hair when you dye it. Firstly, don't use a rose from your garden, go buy a single one from a florist or a grocery store, they usually last longer than normal, and depending on where you get it, it should have a packet of mixture to make it last longer. If it doesn't have this mixture, dissolve an asprin or two in the water your rose will be in, the dye process could take a day or two. Go get the proper color food coloring and put enough to make the water a dark color, so that you know there's alot in there and sit the rose in it. As the rose sucks up the water, you will be able to see the dye. This usually only works on red roses to turn them black with black dye or blue dye. I hope this helps, and remember, be patient, the results might look funny at first, but it can take time.

It takes several days for this process, but it works.
Get black ink from a crafts store. Calligraphy ink works well. Mix it into the water in the vase containing a white rose (red works, too, but the color comes out better when it's white). The rose will "drink" the ink and change the color of the rose.
I also highly recommend putting plant food in the vase to help keep the rose fresh-looking, as the black ink tends to kill the rose after awhile.

haha, okay. I've got the perfect solution. You can thank my grade 4 science teacher.
Well, get a white rose.
Then get a basin with water and fill it with black water (food coloring or whatever)
Then wait a day, and the white rose should turn black.
Good luck.
If it doesn't work, just tell her everysingle store is out. And get her a really pretty bunch of flowers.

Take a white rose and but it in water that you have dyed black. The pettles will turn black because the flower drinks that water. It works, I'v trid it.
