There are so many ideas and I guess there are many websites dedicated to this topic. Personally I used to have a structured bedtime routine each night, complete with lullaby at the end, so my children knew for certain that it was time to sleep. I wrapped them in baby blankets or muslin wraps (depending on the season) which helped them feel secure. They seemed to all settle into an overnight sleep pattern all by themselves somewhere around three months..but it varies from baby to baby. Maybe check out a book called The Baby Whisperer..I believe it is full of great tips.

Hi! I would advise you to give your baby a bottle (6 oz) every four to five hours. If you are feeding more often than this it could be the root cause of why your baby is not sleeping through the night. Do not give your baby oatmeal yet! Start him/her on rice cereal before bed. This will satisfy baby and help him sleep longer but remember that he still primarily needs formula and don't start solids until he is six months as starting this early could cause him to have food allergies.
Set a lights out routine at a certain time. I usually give my baby a warm bath around 8:30 or so and it winds her down and she sleeps easily then. If this fails, then try rocking him to sleep in a quiet and dimly lit room. Singing and making eye contact signals him that it's time to be awake.
If your baby is feeling uncomfortable in his bed then this could be why he isn't sleeping well. Sometimes if they have a stuffy nose then they breathe and rest a lot better in a carrier that elevates the head. Make sure that he's tucked in nice and cozy but not too warm or cool.
There could be so many reasons why he isn't sleeping but maybe trying these things will help. Teething and tummy aches can also sometimes affect sleep but I doubt this is the case as I think that your baby has fallen into this regular pattern of waking. Don't worry it won't always be like this! Good luck!

I'd feed the baby cereal before bed to fill his tummy, but maybe not through a bottle. Anyways, good luck. My almost 6 month old sleeps well, but it took us a while to learn that he only sleeps on his tummy and that he likes his head covered when he sleeps. You just have to learn what your baby does and doesn't like when he goes to bed.

It's too early to expect a child to sleep all the way through. And don't add ceral to the bottle as the prev poster suggested. If the child has trouble digesting the cereal you'll be up ALL night.
Good Luck!

i put cereal in my 4 month old daughters bottle just before she goes down for the night. this is not recommended by my pediatrician but i did it with my first baby too. she goes to bed around 10 or 11 and usually sleeps until 6 or 8am.

5 months old is too young to sleep through the night - very few babies this age sleep thought the nights - their tummies are not mature enough to last that long without food...
if you were not prepared to be awake most of the night - you shouldnt have had a kid...

Let him cry it out. Put him to bed at bedtime, go through your routine, leave the room, and DON'T GO BACK till morning. My sister in law paid a "sleep consultant" a hundred bucks to tell her that in San Francisco--you are getting it here for free!

Good luck, I can't even get my 10 month old to do that. I've tried everything. This first year is the toughest, but you'll get used to it, just stay calm and remeber it won't last forever(at least i tell myself that:)

try giving him/her a warm bottle before bed time...the oatmeal idea above is a really good idea too, that usually works.
