Almost a week ago, my mother bought three goldfish, Jack, Janet and Chrissy. She purchased a bowl and two plant seeds, and placed the three fish in it. The next morning, Janet was dead. So, we removed her, cleaned the water, and that night, my mother bought another Janet. The next morning, that Janet was dead. We conditioned the water each time we changed it, they are fed pellets, and the other two, Jack and Chrissy are fine. I noticed that Jack was chasing the first Janet around and sucking at her tail. Do fish compete with each other? Do Jack and Janet have a conspiracy going on? Any suggestions?

Goldfish are usually very friendly but putting that many fish in something that is too small for one will always cause aggression. The one fish may of killed the dead ones or they could be dieing from unhealthy water, which you will always have in a bowl unless you clean it 2 times a day.

If you would like to have healthy fish that live please get them a tank that is big enough. Goldfish need 10 gallons each minimum. Here's a site that can teach you all about why that's important and anything else you need or want to know, http://kokosgoldfish.com/

Number one, DON"T change the golfish water. It's O.K. to fill it w/clean H2O after there is some evaporation but don't drain it then fill with new.Goldfish like their own dirt and muck-I was told this by a fish & aquarium guy and I have a goldfish that's about
31\2 inches long {his name is Hannibal}. Goldfish do compete and will kill & some will eat the fish they kill. Hannibal killed every one of his tank-mates {12 of them} as well as the two snails we put in. Some fish are just evil.

Fish are territorial for breeding areas. Purchase a tank large enough for each fish to have its own territory.
