Why can't the cost of the tip be put into the bill? Then you can choose whether to eat at that place or not, depending on the total cost.

The difference is that if you don't know how much the tip is, how do you decide? If it is put in the bill, you will know how much it is. It also helps tourist, who's not sure about the tipping system.

But how much is a smaller tip? I don't think there is such thing as a smaller tip. Either you tip or you don't.

Rolo_Love: I know what you mean, but not paying tips even if you had bad service is our choice, but they will still make it difficult for you, e.g. refuse to let you go, or continue to harrass you. I like the idea that someone gave, which is the tip is automatically charged, but you have the option of removing it. So, either you pay the tip, or you don't.

I spent around 20 years in F&B. If you have to ask what F&B is, you probably have no business reading this question lol. I think that tips being included is a positive idea. Where I am, there is an extreme amount of tourism. Where these people come from, servers make $8-$10 an hour and do not receive tips. So they stiff you a lot of the time. If you have the people that really appreciate good service, they will gladly tip beyond what is already added. People must be aware before hand tho. If you get bad service, you should be able to subtract that gratuity from your bill if you feel it necessary.

I prefer it the way it is. I don't always follow the rules and give 15 % of the bill. It may be wrong, but I usually tip according to how good the service was or how friendly and helpful the waiter/waitress was. If they do exceptionally well I tend to tip really well and if they do a crappy job I give a crappy tip. If it was always added into the bill, then they could always do a crappy job and there is nothing you can do about it. Unless of course you just don't eat there anymore, which I have also done. At least this way they actually have to work for their tips instead of just getting it handed to them regardless!!!

P.S.- Ali, I would never give my business to any place that would harass me or not let me leave if I didn't give them the tip they wanted. Fortunately this has never happened to me and I really hope it has never happened to you either. If it has then you are definitely eating at the wrong places. Please choose more carefully. No one deserves that kind of treatment and disrespect. I still say we are all free to choose, give as much or as little as you see fit. To me it is just that simple, you cannot be forced to do otherwise!!!

P.S.S.- I know we probably won't change each others minds on this subject and I respect that, so the best we can do is just agree to disagree!

Peace to you!

I agree I live on a very limited budget and can't afford a big tip.
Don't want to look stingy, i never go in a place where they serve food. I go to Wendy's or Taco bell or Mcdonald's. What I pay is what I get. If you go in a restaurant this boy took me and the waitress acted real insulted when he asked for Catsup for his steak and we were through eating before she brought it and she said, "I am really busy today" Like your a pain in the butt.
All I had was a small salad. So, I wasn't a problem for her.
then they say customers are so mean! By the way I never did get a drink of water. How much tip should he leave?

Not everyone wants to tip. Putting the cost on a bill would be forcing people to pay.
I'm sure waiters and waitresses feel better knowing they got a tip because someone was happy with them, and not because they were forced to pay.

Tipping should be voluntary - not forced. Tipping is all about good service! Unfortunately, tipping is expected for every meal these days - If you get bad service, you just leave a smaller tip.

I have to disagree with your proposal though!

I think servers should get paid a decent wage, and tipping should not be needed. In Quebec the minimum tip is written into provincial law and is printed on your bill. That is because the government wanted to get their 30% cut on it as income tax.

the tipping system is supposed to compliment the waiter/sever or whatever on their effort. plus if the sever were to add tip, you'd never eat out anywhere.
