I have a fender strat and bought it brand new. Never had any problems with the tuning pegs before until now. I took the old strings off which are the ones that came on the guitar so i'd never changes the strings on this guitar before. Now when im trying to wind the new strings up, on about 3 pegs, after a few winds the peg gets really tight and if I carry on turning it it gives way and the string slackens off. What causes it and what can I do? I was thinking about spaying a bit of WD40 in the tuning peg casing but I thought it might make it too slippy and not grip at all?

When re-stringing you axe, be sure to pull all the slack from the bottom (where the string wraps around the ball and goes into the bridge). Then pull the string through the peg until you have about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of slack from neck to string. Wind peg using machine head making sure that the string is winding down the peg in a spiral like fashion. When the string is at desired tension, tune as normal. Hope this helps.

depending on how long you have had it, you can probably take it back to the place you bought it, and they will fix it, if its on warrenty if its not on warrenty and was sold as is your probably screwed. it might need new tuning keys if this is the first time you changed the strings i would think that you just recently got this guitar. if you got it at a regular guitar store they will probably fix it for free.

Some WD40 should fix that just don't use too much!
