As often as I can. Although, I must admit, computers have made it very easy to neglect the art of writing letters by hand.... heck ,even invitations and thank you notes I have received by email instead of by slow mail. *sigh* I fear there are some people whose penmanship I will never know.....I will always associate them with a certain font type instead. This question has reminded me of a children's poem I once read....regarding "Snail Mail".... I thought I'd include it since it seems appropriately silly.
Post Haste
‘If I'm reincarnated,
I'd like to be a snail’
So spoke the postman, as
He handed me my mail.
With a snail as a postman
The service might be better
And I don't think I'd mind
The odd slimy letter.

I do. There's just something nice about sending or receiving an actual letter. Knowing someone took the time to write it and post it. I love seeing the stamps... especially if it's posted from somewhere far away and exotic. Stamps seem so old-fashioned now in a way... but in a good way, like leather luggage, or real corks in wine. I sent my friend a letter once which I illustrated as well just for fun. She liked the drawing so much she still has it posted on her fridge, which would never happen with an email.
There was that book a while back... Griffin & Sabine, which for me kind of sums up the whole romance of letter writing, and demostrates what's been lost through email and instant messaging.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhttttttttttt. It was technology that made you lazy.
I can't imagine "writing" a letter...even when letter writing was "popular" I still typed them out on my manual typewriter.
And yeah, I do in fact miss that, it seemed so personal and thoughtful that someone took the time to write a letter. Now you can rattle off a quick email...and while that's nice and easy and convenient...it's just not the same.
Personally...I like talking on the phone or in person if it's about anything meaningful...it's too difficult to communicate effectively via email, or even IM...it's too easy to take things the wrong way.

Yes, I still use snail mail a lot.
However I type a lot of my letters, especially business ones.
Cards and notes are handwritten of course.
I have to write to elderly relatives on occasion, (none of them are on the net).
But I generally keep in touch by phone or email.

I do use snail mail when it is absolutely necessary, but in these times as you said with all the technology, there are so many easier and faster options that good ole letter writing has become almost extinct.
