A love and respect for children. Not only a degree but a real intellect and well-rounded knowledge of most all subjects that they will be taught. I'm appalled at times at how some of these teachers earned their degrees when they can't even spell, nor do they have the slightest idea of what is even going on in current events. I've come across so many like that in the last few years it's no wonder our children aren't learning like they used to.
Bottom line is must have that true education to bring to the children..and a love and respect for each child's life they will touch.

Well, you need to go to school, first of all. And you need to have patience with children and you need to be fun, too. Kids love teachers that have the right balance of fun and strictness. Kid around with them, but show them that you are also serious about teaching. You should also kow your stuff, obviously! And you should make a good lesson plan so that the students will understand it. You need to have a lot of dedication. Teaching is like a 24/7 job. You still work at home, outside of school. And you have to like school! When your life revolves around it, I suppose that helps...

The first thing is that you really have to love children. You also need to be a person who wants to help others better themselves (in every way). I've been teaching for 7 years and I gotta tell ya, if you don't love the rugrats you will not make it! And a degree in education is a good thing to have also, but that in itself doesn't determine whether you can educate children.

Obviously, one needs a degree. but what's more important is passion for the children and the relationships they build with the students. A great teacher is one that really cares and understands the kids, no matter what age they are. I think this is more important than the degree.
