It looks like a hernia but its the size of my fist which is a bit big. I dont realy have pains from it. The doctors say they need to put in a full encircling mesh to repiar it,but then i will not be able to have any more children. I wish to have more children and so am thiking not to take the surgry. I have been told if i have more children with it, it could be dangerous. If its so dangerous why di`nt my midwife,health visitor or GP express any concern about it. So if i had not out of pure curiosity and concern asked my GP about it nothing would have been done about it and i could have gone on and gotten pregnant again, and then what would have happened to me. I despirately need a second opinion and dont know how to go about it. Is it really hernia, if not then what will make a womans abdominal muscles give way and split in the curse of pregnancy. I can do with all the information i can get.

Did you give birth by C-section? If yes, that might be an incisional hernia, caused by inadequate closure of the fascia, muscles, etc.

You're right, it sounds like a hernia. It's quite common to develop a weakness in the musculature of the abdominal wall, which causes your bowel to push through it and cause a lump. Anything that causes raised intra-abdominal pressure - like pregnancy - can predispose to them or make them worse. Hernias don't usually cause problems unless the bowel within them becomes obstructed or the blood supply is compromised.
Who told you it would be dangerous if you have more children with it? Pregnancy may well make it worse and more obvious, but that shouldn't mean you can't get pregnant again. You would need to get checked out asap if it became tender in case it had become strangulated (compromised blood supply). Talk to your GP - if they have concerns they can refer you to an obstetrician or a general surgeon for a specialist opinion.

It could very well be a hernia. You always have the right to a second, third etc.. opinion. But I would suggest just not anyone in the office were you first went. Doctors talk to easy other and the 2nd doc may be biased by the 1st's conclusion. maybe the reason he said that you can't get pregnant agin is because once the mesh is in, skin envelopes it and you would be tearing it while pregnant. Make the doc tell you why he said that in very layman's terms. Hope this helps you!

from all what u have said im sure it is a hernia. can u go on the internet and type in pregnancy hernias and that might give u an idea. also on bbc website news page there is a tool bar for health there are a lot of health issues on there so that might help u too.
hernias can be any size - even if u think its big it still can be a hernia

It sounds like an umbilical hernia. They are quite common especially in pregnancy. When it comes down to it, it is your choice of what to do, but I would go for the repair as it sounds quite large. Maybe you should accept the 2 children you have as your complete family, because if there are complications from the hernia not being repaired you wont be having any more children anyway!!

If it is above your belly button, I have that same hernia. My Dr said not to get it repaired until I am finished having children. I would get a second opinion if I were you or go back and get him to explain it better to you!!

Speak to your midwife about it.
Hernia during pregnancy is fairly common, but your's does sound a little larger than most.
