Of course, the only way to save America's freedom is by making it a communist police state.

I have to agree with part of what Answergirl said. I believe most Republicans are putting forth the ideas they believe are best for this country, just as most Democrats are. I am a liberal but I have great respect for those on both sides of issues who wish to carry on a mature discourse of ideas. That is what makes us great.

However, I also believe far too many people from both perspectives have either missed what happened two days ago or have simply chosen to ignore it. The military commissions act was not just about torture, or trials for terrorists. That act also made it possible for US citizens to be declared a threat and picked up with no access to writ of habeus corpus and no opportunity to defend themselves against any charges. In addition that citizen, under the act, could be sent for interrogation outside this country. And who would be authorized to declare a citizen a threat? A commission, or person or persons appointed by the president.

Forget for a moment that you do or do not like this president. Forget he is even in office. This act empowers not only George W. Bush to act against citizens in this way, it enables every president elected while this is the law to do the same.

If the supreme court upholds this law it will be a fundemental change in our constitution. More frightening it will be a change that the citizens of this country had no chance to be heard on. Constitutional scholars have stated that this act changes what this nation is and has been. I can only agree.

It is questions like this that really try my patience. While I am neither a Republican or a Democrat, I know of no one that would support such a ridiculous idea. Putting forth such nonsense shows your ignorance and shallow thinking ability. The Republicans I know are far more respectful to the voting public and to elected officials than you are. They would respect the public choice. Do not put forth this garbage, if you want others to listen to your legitimate points of view.
